Ruttler Named Stockton Head Men’s Soccer Coach

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University has named alumnus and Stockton Athletics Hall of Famer Greg Ruttler as its new men's soccer coach. Ruttler moves up to the head coaching position after nine years as assistant and then associate head coach for the Ospreys. During his time on the Stockton staff, the program's record is 119-61-22 (.644 winning percentage) with two NCAA Tournament appearances.

"It is an honor to be named the next head men's soccer coach at Stockton University," Ruttler said. "The program has a rich tradition and my goal is to further that tradition while consistently being among the top soccer programs in the nation." Ruttler is the second alumnus to lead the Stockton men's soccer team, joining Tim Lenahan '83 who coached the Ospreys from 1990-97. His first game as a college head coach will come on September 1 when the Ospreys play at Widener.

Ruttler replaces Jeff Haines, under whom he both played and coached at Stockton. Haines retired at the conclusion of the 2014 season after posting a 262-99-34 record with one NCAA championship (2001), two NCAA Final Fours (1999, 2001) and four NJAC championships (1999, 01, 02, 04) in 17 years at the helm. He is now an assistant athletic director at Stockton.

Ruttler is the fifth head coach in the 42-year history of the Stockton men's soccer program. He joined the staff at his alma mater in 2006 three years after getting his start in coaching at the high school level. Ruttler helped lead Stockton to at least 11 wins in all nine of his seasons, including NCAA Tournament berths in 2008 and 2010. During that time, the Ospreys also made seven ECAC tournament appearances and won the ECAC Metro title in 2013.

As a player, Ruttler helped propel the Stockton men's soccer program to its greatest heights, winning the NCAA championship in 2001 and reaching the NCAA Final Four in 1999. He was a 2001 NSCAA Third Team All-American, three-time NSCAA all-region, three-time NJAC First Team and the leading scorer on Stockton's 2001 national champion squad.

Ruttler is tied atop Stockton's all-time games played list (97) and stands second at Stockton in career points (125), third in assists (39) and fourth in goals (43). He earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Stockton in 2003. Ruttler was inducted into the Stockton Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011 and South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame in 2013.
