Vaughan Captures Fourth All-American Honor

Results

Canton, NY – Stockton University junior Chelsea Vaughan (Whiting/Southern Regional) captured her fourth All-American honor (two indoor, two outdoor) by finishing fifth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Vaughan topped out at 3.80 meters for fifth place out of 22 competitors. The NCAA meet is taking place at St. Lawrence University.

Four vaulters finished at 3.80 meters and were sorted into fourth through seventh places on tiebreakers, with Vaughan fifth. After passing at the initial height of 3.45 meters, she cleared 3.60 on her second attempt, 3.70 on her first try, 3.75 on her third and final chance and 3.80 on her second attempt before coming up short on all three tries at 3.85 meters.

Vaughan has earned All-American status by finishing in the top eight in all four of her appearances at the NCAA Championships. She was eighth at the NCAA indoor meet in March, fifth at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships and fourth at the national indoor meet last year. Vaughan joined Lisa Shepherd (6) and Kim Marino (5) as the only female competitors in Stockton track & field history with at least four All-American honors.

The pole vault was won by Cimran Virdi of MIT at 4.15 meters. Virdi broke the stadium record of 4.01 meters at St. Lawrence, which ironically had been set by Marino in 2003 when she became Stockton's first female outdoor national champion.

Stockton freshman Jared Lewis (Westville/Deptford) will compete in the men's triple jump at the NCAA Championships on Saturday at 11:30 am.
