Kaitlyn Dermen (Millville/Millville) earned her first career All-American honor by finishing fourth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Dermen cleared 3.75 meters to place fourth out of 21 competitors in the event.
Dermen was one of five vaulters who topped out at 3.75 meters and shook out second among the quintet on tiebreakers. She cleared 3.50 meters on her second attempt and went over the bar at 3.65 meters on her first try. Dermen then vaulted 3.75 meters on her second attempt. The national title was won by Madison Reed of Ohio Northern University at 3.95 meters.
Dermen was competing in an NCAA Championship for the third time. The senior finished ninth at the 2017 NCAA outdoor meet, missing All-American status by one spot, and tied for 12th at the 2018 NCAA indoor meet in March. Dermen entered today's event tied for ninth in the nation and rose to occasion to earn her first All-American nod with fourth place.
The finish caps a 2018 outdoor season in which Dermen won the pole vault at five of seven meets and finished second in the other two. One of those victories came at the NJAC Championships as she successfully defended her 2017 conference crown in the event. Dermen garnered NJAC First Team and USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region accolades for her efforts this season.
