BoxscoreGalloway NJ – No. 1 seed Richard Stockton (15-8) scored twice in the second half and topped No. 8 seed Elmira College (NY) (7-7-3) 2-1 in the first round of the ECAC Metro tournament.
Mairead McKeary (Cranford/Cranford) and
Chelsea James (Howell/Howell) each scored their fourth goal of the season for the Ospreys as they advanced to the ECAC Metro semifinals for the fifth consecutive year.
Â
McKeary broke the scoreless deadlock at 59:24 by tapping in a feed from
Adrianna Boucher (Hamilton/Steinert) who recorded her team-leading 11th assist of the season on the play. Just over 13 minutes later, James headed home a cross by
Brooke Southard (Clayton/OLMA) for a 2-0 Stockton lead that seemed comfortable since the Ospreys had not allowed a shot yet in the game.
Â
James' goal turned out to be the game-winner after Elmira's Mackenzie Donohue deposited a free kick from the right wing just under the crossbar to cut Stockton's lead to 2-1 with just 4:15 to play. The goal came on Elmira's second shot of the game but the Ospreys did not allow any more as they nailed down the 2-1 victory.
Â
Stockton controlled the play throughout the first half and outshot Elmira 11-0 but could not get on the board. The Ospreys seemed primed to take the early lead when an Elmira handball at 16:36 led to a penalty kick by
Marissa Bruno (Toms River/TR East) whose shot was denied by goalkeeper Gabe Carmona.
Â
Stockton outshot Elmira 19-2 in the match and Ospreys' goalie
Lauren Haynes (Williamstown/Williamstown) earned the win. Carmona made six saves, all in the first half. Elmira goalie Amanda Banner from nearby Cedar Creek High School, replaced Carmona for the last five minutes without facing a shot on goal.
Â
Stockton will face the winner of No. 4 Stevens vs. No. 5 Kean in the ECAC Metro semifinals, which will be held at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday (time TBA).
