BoxscoreGalloway, NJ – Stockton University (0-1) dropped its 2015-16 season opener to Staten Island (1-0) 72-68 on Tuesday night. The Ospreys fell behind for good with 14:11 to play and could not pull ahead despite getting within one possession three times the rest of the way.
Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) led Stockton with 21 points.
Stockton scored the first five points of the game but was overtaken with a 9-3 run by Staten Island and led for only 2:02 during the last 15 minutes of the first half. The Ospreys took a 23-22 lead on a layup by
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) with 6:08 on the clock but went scoreless for the next 5:27 before a floater by
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/WW-Plainsboro South) closed the first-half scoring with Stockton trailing 30-25. Cane netted 10 points in the first half to keep the Ospreys close.
In the first five minutes of the second half, the game was tied five times and Stockton briefly led by three as eight points from
Jaymere Hadden (Millville/Millville) sparked the Ospreys. The Dolphins then slowly put some distance between the two squads. Stockton closed within two points on three occasions but could not overtake Staten Island.
Stockton's final rally try came in the last 1:27. A three-pointer by Harmon and two points each by Cane and Hadden closed an eight-point gap down to 70-68 with 26 seconds remaining. Two foul shots by the visitors with 17 ticks left clinched the outcome as the Ospreys fell 72-68.
In addition to Cane's 21 markers, Hadden chipped in with 17 points in his first game in an Osprey uniform. Hadden and
Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) topped the team with six rebounds each, with Harmon dishing a team-high four assists to go along with nine points.
For the Dolphins, All-American Will Fonseca led all scorers with 24 points, pulled down a game-high eight boards and added five assists and three steals. Thomas Delahanty and Frank Schettino added 18 and 14 points respectively. Staten Island shot 60% (15-25) from the field in the second half and 50% (27-54) for the game. The Dolphins also outscored Stockton 40-20 in the paint.
Stockton will host the Stockton Tip-Off Classic this weekend. The Ospreys will face Neumann on Friday at 8 p.m. and then Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday at 3 p.m.
