Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – #17 Stockton University (23-6) rallied in the second half to force overtime but the Ospreys were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament with a 68-59 defeat to Bates College (21-6) in the second round. Stockton trailed by 16 points in the first half, led briefly in the second half but managed just four points in overtime of the hard-fought contest.

In his last game in a Stockton uniform, senior Anthony Woodard (Atlantic City/Atlantic City) shot 7-8 from the floor and scored a career-high 17 points, including 16 in the second half and overtime. Fellow senior Josh Blamon (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) tossed in 14 points followed by Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) with 10.

Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) contributed nine points while Carlton Whitehead (Ewing/Life Center) finished with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Rebounding proved to be an issue for the Ospreys as they were outdone 48-34 on the glass and surrendered 17 second-chance points to Bates.

Stockton fell behind 12-0 before finally getting on the board with two Blamon free throws nearly six minutes into the game. The Ospreys continued to struggle and trailed 27-11 with 6:42 on the first-half clock. Stockton managed to close the gap to 33-23 at the half primarily of the strength of going 10-12 at the free throw line (83.3%). Their success at the stripe offset dismal 6-26 shooting (23.1%) from the field. Blamon paced the offense with 11 first-half points.

Stockton dug in during the second half, shooting 52 percent while holding Bates to 22 points and 25-percent shooting. The Ospreys raced into the lead by opening the half with a 17-6 run led by Cane with five points and Woodard with four. A three-pointer by Whitehead put Stockton on top for the first time in the game at 40-39 but Bates answered with a 10-2 spurt to go back on top 49-42.

Bates maintained the lead for most of the last nine minutes. Stockton faced a 55-51 deficit with 2:58 on the clock but rallied to tie on two Woodard free throws followed by a layup from Woodard to make it 55-55 with 43 seconds left. The last two possessions of regulation ended in a shot-clock violation by Bates and a desperation three-pointer by Stockton's Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.), leading to overtime.

Woodard sandwiched two layups around a Bates basket for a 59-58 lead that was Stockton's last of the game. The Bobcats scored the next four points to pull ahead for good. The Ospreys then missed their last four field goal attempts while Bates went 5-6 at the line in the last 26 seconds to seal Stockton's fate in the 68-59 defeat.

Stockton reached the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive year and won its second straight NJAC championship. The Ospreys played in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in eight years and won at least one NCAA tourney game for the 12th time in their 15 NCAA appearances overall.
