Stockton Falls to #11 Salisbury in Second Round

Boxscore

Salisbury, MD – Stockton University (22-7) played a strong first half but could not sustain the momentum and was overtaken by #11 Salisbury (27-2) 61-54 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The defeat brought an end to an outstanding season that saw the Ospreys tie the school record for victories (22).

All three Stockton seniors reached double figures in their final college game, led by Lauren Alwan (Winslow Twp./Timber Creek) with a team-high 17 points. Sara Farrell (Marlton/Cherokee) went 3-4 from three-point range and finished with 14 points followed by Alex Nardoza (Fords/Woodbridge) with 10 markers. Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) totaled 14 rebounds, seven blocks and four points as her superb freshman year came to a close.

After scoring just three points in the first eight minutes, Stockton fought back with a 16-3 run to pull ahead 19-15. Alwan keyed the explosion with seven points and Farrell drained two three-pointers. The Ospreys trailed for just one possession during the rest of the half on the way to a 35-30 lead at the break. Alwan and Farrell led Stockton with 12 and 10 first-half points respectively.

Stockton cooled off in the second half, shooting just 27.6 percent and scoring 19 points. The Ospreys fell victim to a 12-2 spurt by Salisbury to open the period and never recovered. Stockton scored just six points in the first 10:15, two each by Alwan, Nardoza and Farrell, as the margin grew to double digits at 53-41.

The deficit peaked at 18 with six minutes to play but Stockton gamely tried to stage a rally. Nardoza hit two three-pointers and the Ospreys reeled off 11 straight points to get as close as 61-54 with 1:17 on the clock but the comeback stalled and Stockton was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

Alwan, Nardoza and Farrell all reached the 1,000-point mark during a campaign that saw the Ospreys tie the school record of 22 victories that was set in 2005-06 and return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011.
