Stockton Drops Twinbill 12-11 and 6-1

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (11-10, 3-6 NJAC), in their last home doubleheader of the season, dropped both games to William Paterson (16-6, 4-4 NJAC) by scores of 12-11 (11 innings) and 6-1. Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) led the Ospreys on the day with four hits and four runs scored. It was the 10th time in the last 11 meetings the Pioneers have defeated Stockton.
 
Game one was a slugfest that saw the teams combined for 23 runs and 32 hits in the contest. With the game 5-4 in favor of the Ospreys after three innings, the Pioneers plated five runs in their half of the fourth frame to take a 9-5 lead. After the squads traded runs to give Paterson a 10-6 advantage, Stockton got within one at 10-9. The home sixth frame was highlighted by a Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) two RBI double and a George Eisenhart (Harrison Twp. /Clearview) RBI single.
 
The teams again scored a marker each in the eighth inning for an 11-10 Pioneer lead until the Osprey ninth inning. Sweeney walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mangarella reached on an error, setting up Brett Solomen (Harrison Twp. /Clearview) who scored Sweeney with a game-tying RBI single to send the game into extra innings. The visitors then scored the eventual winning run on three hits in the top of the 11th inning. Stockton could not answer in their half for the 12-11 final.
 
Mangarella knocked in three runs while Sweeney rapped three hits and scored four times. Solomen and Erik Danser (Marlton/Cherokee) had two RBI each. Doug Pastore (New Providence/New Providence) took the loss in relief.
 
The nightcap was all Pioneers as hurler Mario Danza scattered seven hits, allowing just one unearned run, as he earned his third win of the season with the complete game victory. Stockton broke the shutout attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning as Antonio Morello (Washington Twp. /Washington Twp.) reached on a hit and advanced to second on a throwing error by Danza. Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) plated Morello with his second hit of the game to set the final at 6-1. Aidan Ryan suffered his first loss of the season against four wins.
 
For the Pioneers, who 30 hits on the day, Mike Knauf and A.J. Flores each had five hits, while teammates Tyler Garguilo and Mike Abate rapped four safeties each. Garguilo had four RBI in game two, with Abate scoring four runs and smashing an opposite field homer in game one. Mitch D'Amato picked up his first win of the season in the first game tossing three innings of scoreless relief.
 
Stockton will host Rutgers-Camden on Monday in a make-up game that was postponed from April 9. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
