Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-1) scored 60 points in the second half and pulled away for a 99-82 victory over Delaware Valley (3-2) on Monday night.
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) led five Ospreys in double figures with a career-high 18 points. The two teams shot 103 free throws in the foul-laden contest, two short of the NCAA Division III record of 105 by Earlham and Oberlin in a 1992 game.
The Aggies used their size and strength to give Stockton problems during the first half. The Ospreys trailed by as much as eight but closed the deficit to 43-39 as
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor Plainsboro South) scored the last four points of the period. The Aggies shot 21-29 (72.4%) from the line in the half while Johnson scored 14 of his career-high 17 points in the stanza.
Stockton came out of the locker room a different team as they switched to a zone defense that swung the momentum. The Ospreys scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 47-43 lead. The defense held Delaware Valley scoreless until Ryan Naccarato nailed a three-pointer to close to 47-46 with 15:22 remaining.
After the seventh and final tie of the game at 50-50, the Ospreys then used an 18-5 spurt to take control of the contest at 68-55 with 7:46 to play. Seven points by Barnes and another six markers from
Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) in the middle of the run gave Stockton the advantage.
The Aggies closed to within six points, 70-64 at 6:33, but that was as close as they would come, as Ford halted the rally with two free throws. Stockton pulled away down the stretch, extending the lead back to 19 before closing out the 99-82 victory.
In addition to Barnes' big game, Johnson set career highs with 17 points and five rebounds while
Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) tied his career-best with 15 points. Ford added 17 points while freshman
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) set career highs with 10 points and nine rebounds to tie
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) for team-high honors on the boards.
Blake Rossell (Margate/St. Augustine) also set a career high with seven rebounds as Stockton held a 51-43 advantage on the glass. Stockton shot a solid 30-37 (81.1%) in the second half from the charity stripe to seal the game. The Ospreys went 39-51 (76.5%) at the stripe overall.
Delaware Valley was led by Manny Brown with 19 points while teammates Tyliek Kimbrough and Tyrea Williams added 14 markers each. Williams also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Naccarato finished up with 10 points
Stockton will return to league play on Wednesday, when they face The College of New Jersey at 8 p.m. to finish up a four-game homestand to start the season.
