Stockton Succumbs to NJCU Rally in 68-61 Setback

Jersey City, NJ – Stockton University (17-6, 12-4 NJAC) tumbled into second place in the NJAC with a 68-61 defeat to league leader New Jersey City (16-7, 13-3). The setback snapped an eight-game winning streak by the Ospreys and denied head coach Gerry Matthews his 600th career win for the time being. Stockton led by 12 with 12 minutes to go but could not hold off the Gothic Knights.
 
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) scored a team-high 18 points, just one off his career best. Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) tossed in 14 markers and added a team highs of eight rebounds and three steals. Jaymere Hadden (Millville/Millville) also scored 14 points for Stockton. The Ospreys could not overcome 23 turnovers and 4-18 (22.2%) three-point shooting.
 
Stockton got off to a great start, building a 20-3 lead while NJCU went just 1-11 from the floor with five turnovers in the first 7:13. Cane led the charge with nine points. The margin gradually shrunk as the first half wore on and the Ospreys found themselves leading by only six, 34-28, at the break. Stockton held the Gothic Knights to just 17.6% shooting but committed 13 fouls that resulted in 15 NJCU points at the line.
 
The margin got down to two points in the first minute of the second half before Stockton scored three straight baskets to extend to 40-32. The Ospreys later boosted their advantage to 53-41 at the 12:10 mark by reeling off seven straight points, four by Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) and three by Harmon.
 
New Jersey City outscored Stockton 17-4 over the next six-plus minutes and the Ospreys faced their first deficit of the game at 58-57. Harmon answered with a three-pointer to put Stockton back on top 60-58 with 5:35 remaining but they scored just one point the rest of the way and fell to the Gothic Knights for the second time this season, 68-61.
 
Stockton will host Kean University on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the final regular season home game for the Ospreys.
