Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-18, 0-6 NJAC) rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the ninth but came up one short as the Ospreys fell to Rutgers-Camden (16-8, 4-4 NJAC) 11-10 on Friday afternoon. Stockton almost overcame seven errors in the field as they rapped 11 hits.
Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South),
Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) and
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) had two hits each for the home team.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Stockton evened the score in their half of the inning when Sweeney plated
Matt Poinsett (Ocean Gate/Msgr. Donovan), who had reached on a fielder's choice, with a double. The Scarlet Raptors took a 4-1 lead on three runs, two hits and three errors in the second inning.
Stockton got one back in the third frame when Poinsett and Sweeney walked and
Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases. Bessinger walked, scoring Poinsett to make it 4-2 but the rally ended as a double play and strikeout ended the inning.
The visitors struck for five more markers on four hits and three more errors in their half of the fifth for a 9-2 margin. Two more tallies by Rutgers-Camden in the seventh made it a seemingly insurmountable 11-2 deficit until the ninth inning.
Stockton sent 15 hitters to the plate and almost pulled off the miracle comeback.
Stephen Struble (Hammonton/Hammonton) walked and with one out, pinch-hitter
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) mashed a double, scoring Struble. Sweeney was hit by a pitch, his fourth time reaching base in the game, and Mangarella walked, loading the bases. Bessinger then was hit by a pitch, scoring Gonella to make it 11-4.
Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas valley) smacked an RBI single, then
Joe LaCava was hit by a pitch for an RBI and it was 11-6 with the bases still loaded. A lineout to right made it two outs before Struble cracked a long triple to center to clear the bases and suddenly it was 11-9 in favor of the Scarlet Raptors.
Gonella became the fourth batter to be hit by a pitch in the inning, putting runners on first and third, before pinch-hitter
James Wines (Hazlet/Raritan) legged out an infield hit to plate Struble with the eighth run of the inning. A strikeout ended the rally as the Ospreys fell one run short, 11-10.
Struble had three RBI and scored two runs, with Bessinger knocking in two runs and Poinsett scoring twice.
Dylan Warburton (Swell/Washington Twp.) took the loss, allowing just two earned runs in 4.2 innings for Stockton .
Steve Rodier (Sicklerville/Timber Creek finished up, scattering five hits while striking out two batters.
Joe Brooks, Andujar Cedeno and Cory Kreamer picked up two hits each while Joe Sigismondi scored four of the 11 runs for the Scarlet Raptors. Steven Bloyed, the second of five hurlers for Rutgers-Camden, picked up his first win of the season in relief, tossing five scoreless innings andl allowing just two hits.
Stockton will take back in action tomorrow when they travel to William Paterson for a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
