Jersey City, NJ – Stockton University (21-7, 5-3 NJAC) scored 32 runs on 31 hits in a 13-1, 19-5 sweep of New Jersey City (11-17, 0-10) that extended Stockton's win streak to seven games. The first game ended in six innings due to the run rule. The 19 runs in the nightcap were the most scored by the Ospreys since a 25-0 win over Rosemont on April 2, 2009.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) led Stockton with seven runs and five hits on the day. Thomas went 2-2 with three runs and three stolen bases in the opener.
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) was 4-4 with two RBI while
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) and
Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) each added two hits.
The Ospreys scored two runs apiece in the first three innings before NJCU plated its only run in the bottom of the third. Shockey rapped her second RBI single of the game in the fourth frame to make it 7-1 and Stockton put the game away with six runs in the top of the sixth.
Massa doubled in the first two runs and
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) earned an RBI with a sacrifice bunt. With two on and two out, Cuffari, a senior, slugged a three-run homer that was her first career home run in her 122nd game to put the finishing touch on the 13-1 win. Shockey pitched the first four innings, allowing just an unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts for the win.
In the second game, Thomas tallied four runs and three hits while
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) chipped in with three hits, three runs and three RBI. Pitcher
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) improved to 5-0 on the season with six shutout innings in which she fanned eight and allowed just one hit.
After scoring twice in the first inning, the Ospreys added three more in the second on an RBI double by Thomas and a two-run double by
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) for a 5-0 lead. Lugo singled in two of Stockton's three runs in the third inning and the Ospreys added two unearned markers in the fourth as the advantage ballooned to 10-0.
NJCU halved the margin to 10-5 with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Catherine Wunder (Clinton/North Hunterdon) led off the sixth frame with her second home run of the season for an 11-5 lead. Stockton then exploded for eight runs on five hits and four NJCU errors in the top of the seventh.
Lugo led off with her team-leading third homer of the season to ignite the scoring spree. Later in the inning, Tomo blasted a three-run homer, her first dinger since the 2014 season. Lugo knocked her second hit of the inning and scored the last run of the game, unearned, to cap the 19-5 rout.
Stockton will host Rowan University in an NJAC doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Profs are ranked No. 14 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll.
