Game 1 /
Game 2
Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-22, 4-10 NJAC) dropped both ends of an NJAC twinbill against Kean University (22-12, 11-3) that was delayed nearly three hours due to rain. The Ospreys' ninth-inning rally fell one run short 6-5 in the opener and they fell 8-2 in the nightcap, which was halted after eight innings due to darkness.
Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) and
Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) stroked two hits apiece in the first game.
Brandon Perna (Cherry Hill/CH West) pitched eight innings, allowing just one earned run plus three unearned on eight hits with four strikeouts.
After three scoreless innings, Kean plated two runs in the fourth inning and added one in the sixth to put Stockton behind 3-0. The Ospreys got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) led off with his team-leading third homer of the year.
One inning later,
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) rapped a two-run single that pulled Stockton into a 3-3 tie. Kean went back in front with three runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, two walks set the stage for
Matt Poinsett (Ocean Gate/Msgr. Donovan) to deliver a two-run single with two outs that got the Ospreys within 6-5. Sweeney followed with a single that moved Poinsett, the tying run, into scoring position but a strikeout ended the comeback try and Stockton fell by one.
Sweeney,
Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) and
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) accounted for six of Stockton's seven hits in the nightcap with two apiece. Hobbs extended his reached-base streak to 10 games, the longest by any Stockton player this season.
Kean broke on top with three runs in the second inning and added one in the fourth for a 4-0 score before the Ospreys got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) led off with a single and later scored on a fielders' choice off the bat of LaPorta to make it 4-1.
Kean added to the margin with four runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half, Bessinger led off with a walk and later scored on an RBI groundout by
Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.). The game was stopped at the end of the eighth due to darkness and the Ospreys suffered the 8-2 setback.
Stockton's next game will be at New Jersey City on Thursday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m.
