Late Rally Pushes Stockton to 6-5 Win

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-23, 5-11 NJAC) scored six runs in the seventh inning and held on for a 6-5 victory over New Jersey City (15-21, 1-15 NJAC) on Friday afternoon. The Ospreys snapped a five-game losing skid as Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) led the way for the home team with three of the squad's seven hits on the afternoon.

The Gothic Knights started quickly against Osprey hurler Kevin Buell (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.), plating two runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. NJCU tacked on single tallies in the third and fourth frames for a 4-0 advantage as Stockton could not muster any offense early on. The Ospreys' only threat came in their half of the second inning as they loaded the bases with two outs but came away empty.

Stockton's dormant offense came to life in the seventh inning. The Ospreys sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on four hits and five walks, giving Stockton the lead at 6-4. Five different Ospreys were credited with RBI, with Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) and Nick LaPorta (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) rapping RBI hits in the frame.

The next inning saw the Gothic Knights cut the margin to one at 6-5, scoring a run off Ryan Adamski (Deptford/Deptford) who relieved Buell. Adamski then shut the door, tossing a perfect ninth inning to preserve the victory.

Mangarella picked up an RBI in addition to his three hits, with Sweeney, LaPorta, Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial), Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) and Stephen Struble (Hammonton/Hammonton) also driving in runs on the day. Buell raised his record to 2-2 with seven innings of work on the hill, striking out five batters. Adamski picked up his second save of the year by pitching the final two innings.

New Jersey City was led by Dan Berardi, who had three of the Gothic Knights' 10 safeties and two RBI on the afternoon. The second hurler of the day for NJCU, Anthony Keri, took his first loss of the year in relief.

Stockton will finish up the 2016 season tomorrow when they host Rutgers-Newark in a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m.
