Stockton Reaches 30-Win Mark with Two Shutouts

Game 1 / Game 2

Wayne, NJ – Stockton University (30-10, 13-5 NJAC) reached the 30-win mark for just the second time in school history and clinched its highest seed ever for the NJAC tournament with a sweep of William Paterson (28-12, 9-9). The Ospreys blanked the Pioneers 1-0 and 4-0, earning the No. 2 seed for the NJAC tourney, which begins on Tuesday.

Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) rapped five hits to tie the school record of 59 in a season by Joey Afflitto in 2009. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) equaled the mark of 31 stolen bases in a season by Heather Leach in 1997 by swiping one bag in each game.

Shockey led the Ospreys to victory in the opener with her arm and her bat. She tossed a two-hit shutout, her seventh whitewash of the season, and fanned three. The senior also went 3-4 and drove in the game's only run, which was scored by Thomas.

Thomas led off the third inning by reaching on an error. The speedster then stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Shockey followed with an RBI double that plated Thomas for a 1-0 lead. Shockey allowed just one hit over the last five innings, a one-out double in the fourth. She retired the final 10 batters that she faced to preserve the 1-0 triumph.

In the nightcap, Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) hurled a four-hitter with three strikeouts for her first shutout of the season. Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) went 2-4 with her first home run of the year. Shockey was 2-4 with a double while Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) went 2-4 and scored once.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth. Lugo singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Shockey. Two batters later, Catherine Wunder (Clinton/North Hunterdon) lofted a sacrifice fly to score Lugo with the first run of the contest.

Stockton broke the game open with three runs in the sixth frame, starting with a leadoff homer by Dorris that made it 2-0. After singles by Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) and Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove), both runners stole to move into scoring position. Thomas singled in Tomo and advanced Cuffari to third. Cuffari then scored on a double steal to increase the lead to 4-0.

Bibeault allowed just one runner to reach second base and none farther than that in a masterful performance on the mound. The sophomore faced her biggest threat in the bottom of the seventh as the first two William Paterson batters singled. A double play on a lineout thwarted the Pioneers' comeback try and Bibeault retired the next batter on a flyout to close the 4-0 victory.

Stockton is the No. 2 seed for the NJAC tournament. On Tuesday at 4 p.m., the Ospreys will host an NJAC playoff game for just the second time in school history and first since 1994 when they face No. 5 Rutgers-Camden. The remainder of the double-elimination tournament will take place at top seed Rowan University on May 6-8.
