Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (15-7, 1-3 NJAC) split an NJAC home doubleheader with Rutgers-Camden (11-9, 2-2) as the teams exchanged shutouts. The Ospreys were no-hit in a 4-0 defeat but rebounded for their first conference win of the year with a 7-0 whitewash of the Scarlet Raptors in the nightcap.
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) pitched all 14 innings for Stockton, tossing a three-hitter with four strikeouts in the first game followed by a five-hit shutout with two whiffs in the second game.
Shockey was outdueled by Rutgers-Camden hurler Brittany Scott in the opener as Scott hurled a no-hitter with six strikeouts. Two Ospreys reached base in the game.
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) walked in the third inning and
Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) was hit by a pitch in the fourth frame.
Stockton fell behind with a disastrous start as the Scarlet Raptors plated two runs on three errors and two wild pitches in the top of the first. Rutgers-Camden later scored on a two-run homer to right center by Katie Larson in the third inning and dealt the Ospreys the 4-0 defeat.
The Stockton bats finally heated up in the second game as the Ospreys rapped 11 hits, led by Shockey,
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) and
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) with two apiece.
After 10 scoreless innings on the day, Stockton broke out with six runs, five unearned, on five hits and two errors in the fourth inning. Massa and Thomas each delivered RBI singles. Massa, Shockey and
Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) all singled and scored during the outburst as well.
The Ospreys tacked on one more run in the sixth inning.
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) singled and Cuffari followed with an RBI double to left center that scored Tomo with the last run of the 7-0 victory. Shockey's shutout was her fourth of the season.
Stockton will be back in action on Saturday for an NJAC doubleheader at Montclair State at 1 p.m.
