Stockton’s Outstanding Season Ends with Setback

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (32-13) saw its outstanding 2016 season come to an end on a sour note as the Ospreys were downed 18-1 by FDU-Florham (21-17) in five innings in an ECAC tournament losers bracket game. The defeat brought one of the best seasons in school history to a close.

Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) went 1-2 with a run while Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) was 1-2 with an RBI as the duo accounted for Stockton's only two hits in the game. Thomas also added to her school record for stolen bases in a season with one steal.

FDU-Florham put Stockton in an early hole with five runs in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer from Courtney Rohde. The Devils scored twice in the second frame and added a combined 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to bring the game to an end on the eight-run rule. Michelle Mangini hit a grand slam and Nikki Caruso added a solo homer for FDU-Florham.

Stockton's lone tally came in the bottom of the fourth. Thomas led off with a single and stole second. Two batters later, Shockey stroked an RBI single to score Thomas and avert the shutout. Six of the runs that the Ospreys allowed were unearned, the result of four errors.

The game was an aberration for a Stockton team that produced a remarkable season under first-year head coach Mavreen Hering. The Ospreys reached the 30-win mark for the just the second time in school history. Along the way, they cracked the NCAA regional rankings for the first time ever, reaching as high as fourth in the East Region.

Stockton also finished second in the NJAC standings, its highest finish ever, and nearly earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Individually, Shockey set school record for at-bats (156), hits (65) and pitching appearances (36) in a season while also tying the mark for innings pitched (170.1). Thomas set a new school record for stolen bases in a season (35).

Later in the day, NYU won the ECAC Metro/Upstate championship by rallying from a 5-2 deficit to top FDU-Florham 7-5. NYU's Diana King was named Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC tournament.
