Newark, NJ – Stockton University (7-5, 2-4 NJAC) returned to conference play with a 71-56 triumph over Rutgers-Newark (4-9, 3-3) that was its fourth win in the last five games. Four Stockton players reached double figures in a balanced effort by the squad.
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) shot 6-8 from the field for 12 points while
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) sank three three-pointers and netted 12 points.
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) also drained three treys on the way to 11 points.
Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Johnson scored five early points to help Stockton build a 16-10 lead but Rutgers-Newark answered with a 17-6 run to go up 27-22. Harmon then tallied five points as the Ospreys responded with a 12-3 spurt to close the half with a 34-30 edge. Catanoso led the way with six points in the half, followed by Johnson and Harmon with five apiece.
Rutgers-Newark got within one on two occasions in the first four minutes of the second half before Stockton created some distance by scoring 11 straight points. Johnson led the onslaught with two three-pointers and the Ospreys led 46-35 after Johnson's second straight trey. Six consecutive points by Jerkins later made it 59-44 with 7:09 remaining and Stockton stayed in front by double digits the rest of the way to the 71-56 victory.
After six road games in a row, Stockton returns home to host Montclair State in an NJAC game at The Sports Center on Sunday at 4 p.m.
