Stockton Win Streak Ends at Seven

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-2, 2-1 Skyline) had its seven-game winning streak, tied for the longest in school history, snapped with an 11-5 setback to Montclair State (2-6, 2-0 Skyline). Brandon Nunez (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) scored two goals for the Ospreys.

Stockton goalkeeper Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holmdel) stood tall between the pipes despite the outcome. Ruiz made a career-high 19 saves as the Red Hawks, winners of the last eight Skyline Conference championships, outshot the Ospreys 55-29.

Montclair State fired in four goals in the first seven minutes. Stockton settled down defensively from there but had difficulty penetrating the Red Hawk defense. Nunez scored the only goal for the Ospreys in the first quarter, and they trailed 5-1 after the period.

The second quarter was scoreless for over 12 minutes before Mark Scherzer (Holmdel/Holmdel) made it 5-2 but Montclair State answered a minute later the Stockton deficit was four, 6-2, at the half. The Red Hawks pulled away in the third quarter, blanking the Ospreys 4-0 for a 10-2 count after three.

Montclair State opened the fourth quarter with a goal 50 seconds into the period before Stockton netted the last three markers of the game. Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon), Zack Aho (Shamong/Seneca) and Nunez accounted for the tallies but the Ospreys saw their seven-game winning streak halted, 11-5.

Gallo and Aho each finished with a goal and an assist for the Ospreys. Matt Haemmerle and Brady Wulster led Montclair State with three goals apiece. Dan Bellezza added a goal and four assists while goalkeeper Lucas Jones earned the win with seven saves.

Stockton will be back on its home field again on Saturday night when the Ospreys host Purchase College in a Skyline Conference game at 7 p.m.
