Stockton Holds On for 10-9 Victory

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-1) staved off a late rally by Marywood University (2-3) and held on for a 10-9 win on Saturday afternoon. Mike Caposella (Wayne/DePaul Catholic) and Colin Shea (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) led the Ospreys with four goals each, as Stockton finished up a three-game homestand.

Caposella opened up the scoring in the tightly contested match, with his first tally of the day for a 1-0 lead. The Pacers knotted the game midway through the period to make it 1-1 after one frame. Caposella banged in two more scores, along with one from Shea with 16 seconds left, to offset one marker for Marywood, for a 4-2 lead at the break.

Freshman Eric Anderson (Monroe Twp. /Monroe Twp.) and Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) assisted on Caposella's two goals. Stockton held a 3-2 margin on goals in the third period as Shea, Caposella and Mark Scherzer (Holmdel/Holmdel) hit the net to stretch the lead to 7-4 after three quarters.

Shea and Brandon Nunez (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) scored 52 seconds apart at the start of the final frame to make it 9-4 in favor of the Ospreys, with 12:23 left, and it looked like a rout was on. But the Pacers rallied for four straight unassisted goals to cut the Osprey lead to 9-8 with 6:02 left in regulation.

Shea gave Stockton a two goal margin at 10-8 with 2:51 remaining before the Pacers scored on a man-down goal with six seconds left to make it 10-9. Tyler Bollard (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) then won a crucial face-off, his 13th of the day, to seal the 10-9 victory.

In addition to Caposella and Shea's four goals, Nunez dished three assists and scored a goal, with Gallo dishing two helpers. Ryan Bradley (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) scooped a team-high seven ground balls. Goalkeeper Eric Leonard (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) made nine saves in his third win of the season.

Austin Maylor scored four times for the Pacers, with Riley Litman grabbing seven ground balls. Net minder Vinny Biancardi kicked out 16 shots in the loss.

The Ospreys will travel to Hackettstown, NJ for their next game, as they will face off against Centenary University. Game time is set for 3 pm on Wednesday.
