Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (11-12, 3-4 NJAC) started this week's run of four NJAC games in three days with a 3-1 setback to #19 The College of New Jersey (17-6, 6-1). The Lions currently sit atop the NJAC standings.
Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) knocked two of Stockton's three hits in the game, including a double, and scored the lone run. The Ospreys received solid pitching from both
Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) and
Tim Rossi (Pt. Pleasant/Pt. Pleasant Boro).
Hughes allowed just three runs (one unearned) on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings but suffered the loss. Rossi pitched two scoreless innings (three hits, two strikeouts) out of the bullpen.
TCNJ scored two runs on three hits and two stolen bases before the first out of the game was recorded as Danny Borup and Zachary Shindler produced RBI singles. Hughes settled down from there, allowing just one unearned tally in the top of the fourth during the rest of his day on the mound.
Stockton did not break through for a hit off TCNJ starter Brandon Zachary until Morello singled in the fifth frame after a
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) walk. The Ospreys loaded the bases with two outs and freshman
Kobe Sutherland (Cherry Hill/CH East) singled home Morello for his first career RBI to make it 3-1.
Morello later led off the seventh inning with a double that was the only hit for the Ospreys over the last four frames. Stockton could not mount a rally against a trio of TCNJ pitchers, Zachary, Zac DeRocco and closer Matt Curry, who pitched the final two innings for his fourth save of the season, and the Ospreys fell 3-1.
Stockton and TCNJ will play the back end of their home-and-home series in Ewing tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
