Stockton’s Playoff Hopes Dashed by Ramapo

Game 1 / Game 2

Mahwah, NJ – Stockton University (15-19, 7-11 NJAC) saw its NJAC playoff hopes dashed on the last day of the regular season as the Ospreys dropped two games to Ramapo (22-14, 15-3), 4-1 and 7-3. Stockton finished one game out of the last NJAC tournament berth. Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) had two hits, including a double, two RBI and a run in the twinbill.

Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) went 2-3 while LaPorta was 1-4 with a double and an RBI in the first game. Ramapo jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first and added single tallies in the third and seventh innings for a 4-0 count.

Stockton tried to rally with two outs in the ninth. Singles by JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) and Joe Pipher (Brick/Brick Memorial) were followed by an RBI double off the bat of LaPorta. The hit brought the tying run to the plate but a liner off the bat of Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) was snagged on a diving catch in centerfield to end the 4-1 setback.

Brandon Perna (Cherry Hill/CH West) pitched a complete game for Stockton. Perna allowed four runs (one unearned) on nine hits with two strikeouts. He finished the season at 5-2, leading the Osprey pitching staff in wins.

Seven Stockton players rapped one hit apiece in the nightcap. Morello had the only extra-base knock, a double, and drove in two runs. Ramapo again took an early 2-0 lead, this time with single runs in the first and third frames.

Stockton jumped ahead with three runs in the fourth inning. Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) reached on an error, Swentkowski walked and Pipher singled to load the bases. LaPorta stroked an RBI single that scored Gustites but Swentkowski was cut down at the plate. Morello then doubled home Pipher and LaPorta to give the Ospreys a 3-2 lead.

Ramapo went back on top 4-3 with two runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the seventh for the 7-3 final score. Starter Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) went the first 6.2 innings and absorbed the loss, finishing 4-4 on the season. Tyler Apt (Williamstown/Williamstown) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and fanned one.

Stockton finished the 2017 season with a 15-19 record that marked a five-win improvement over the 2016 campaign.
