Galloway, NJ - Stockton University (9-7) tried to rally from a five-goal deficit but came up one tally short and fell to No. 5 seed Marymount University (12-6) 9-8 in the ECAC Tournament semifinals. The Ospreys, who came in as the number one seed, were led by
Alexa Rubino (Voorhees/Eastern) with three markers and
Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) with two goals.
The Saints opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 lead. Ojeda knotted the game with her first tally of the game to make it 1-1 with 23:44 left in the half. Marymount scored the next four goals, including three by Jessica Crew, to stretch the margin to 5-1 before Rubino made it 5-2.
One more goal from Crew, her fourth of the game, came with 1:32 remaining in the half and gave the Saints a 6-2 lead at the break. Stockton had their chances but were stonewalled by Saints netminder Holy Reik with five saves. The Ospreys also banged the post on two other shots.
Crew scored her fifth goal of the day 47 seconds into the second half for a 7-2 lead before Stockton mounted their comeback. Goals by Rubino,
Mary Schmid (Lumberton/Holy Cross) and Ojeda, the latter two coming 25 seconds apart, gave the Ospreys some life at 7-5 with 18:10 to play.
Crew scored her 63rd goal of the season, followed by the eventual game-winner by Abby Westcott, on a Crew assist, to give the Saints a 9-5 lead with 13:54 left in the game.
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) and Rubino scored 22 seconds apart to cut the margin to 9-7 with 12:53 left.
Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) assisted on Rubino's tally.
The visitors were able to keep the Ospreys at bay and hold them to just two shots down the stretch.
Kim Raichelson (Brick/Brick Memorial) tallied the last goal, but only seven seconds remained and time ran out with the final score at 9-8, ending the Ospreys' season.
Rubino, a senior, added three ground balls and three caused turnovers in her final college game, with Paterson chipping in with two ground balls and two caused turnovers on the day.
Maura Twiggs (Ocean City/Ocean City) made two saves in her final game of the year in net.
Crew led the Saints with six goals and an assist. Westcott added a goal and assist, with Reik making nine saves, many at close range, for the victory.
Marymount will face the winner of Misericordia vs. Arcadia in the ECAC championship game, 2 p.m. tomorrow at Stockton.
