Glenside, PA – Stockton University (26-21-1) finished the 2017 season as the ECAC Tournament runner-up after splitting two games today. The Ospreys blanked Penn State Altoona (18-18) 3-0 in the semifinals but then suffered an 11-3 defeat to Arcadia (30-13) in the ECAC championship game.
Sophomore
Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) and freshmen
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) and
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) were the three Ospreys selected to the ECAC All-Tournament Team.
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) tossed a three-hit shutout and tied her career high with nine strikeouts in the win over Penn State Altoona. Bibeault recorded her third shutout and 14th win of the season. Cosenzo went 2-3 with a double and an RBI in the victory.
In the second inning, Lobell plated
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) with an RBI single for the only run that the Ospreys would need. Two batters later, Lobell scored on an RBI groundout by
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) for a 2-0 lead.
Shaw led off the fifth frame with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) and scored on an RBI double by Cosenzo for the last run in the 3-0 triumph. Bibeault faced 23 batters, just two over the minimum, in the masterful outing that propelled Stockton into the ECAC championship game.
No. 2 seed Stockton could not sustain the momentum and fell 11-3 in five innings to No. 1 seed Arcadia. The outcome was decided quickly as the Knights scored nine runs on eight hits and three walks in the bottom of the first.
The Ospreys trailed 11-0 before getting on the board in the third inning. With two outs, Cosenzo tripled and then scored on an RBI single by Lugo. In the fifth stanza, Cosenzo added to her school record with her 41st RBI of the year, sending
Brooke Hallett (Absecon/Holy Spirit) home on a groundout.
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury), who singled during the inning, scored the last run on a wild pitch.
Arentowicz, a senior, finished her career on a six-game hitting streak. Fellow senior
Allyson Kuhn (Leesburg, VA/Tuscarora) came out of the bullpen to pitch two scoreless innings and strike out three Knights in her last appearance for the Ospreys.
