Boxscore

Wayne, NJ – No. 5 seed Stockton University (21-19-1) scored first but could not hold off #20 William Paterson (28-9) and suffered a 6-3 setback in its first game of the NJAC tournament. The defeat relegated the Ospreys into the losers bracket of the double-elimination tourney, which continues on Friday.

Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) rapped two of Stockton's six hits. Lugo extended her hitting streak to six games, during which she is a torrid 10-20 (.500) at the plate. Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) smacked a double and scored twice for the Ospreys.

Stockton broke out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Lugo singled with one out, then Lobell reached on a fielder's choice that retired Lugo. Morgan DiVello (Atco/Hammonton) laid down a bunt that was misplayed for an error, putting two runners aboard. Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) pinch hit and delivered a two-run double to get the Ospreys on the board.

William Paterson, the No. 2 seed for the NJAC tournament, exploded for four runs on five hits in the third frame to go ahead 4-2. A two-run single by Rachel Wasilak and RBI triple by Christine Griffith were the key blows in the inning.

Stockton had a chance to respond in the fourth. Singles by Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) and Lugo followed by a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. The Ospreys failed to convert as a foulout and popup ended the inning.

The Pioneers extended to 6-2 with two unearned runs on two hits and an error in the sixth stanza. In the top of the seventh, Lobell doubled and scored on a pinch-hit double by Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) to make it 6-3. The rally stalled there as the next two batters were retired to end the game.

Reliever Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) came on with Stockton trailing 4-2 and limited William Paterson to two runs, both unearned, on three hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched but the Ospreys were unable to come from behind. Bibeault was not involved in the decision.

The remainder of the NJAC tournament will be played at Kean University on May 5-7. Stockton will try to stay alive when the Ospreys play No. 6 seed Montclair State in a losers bracket game on Friday at 2 p.m.
