Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (16-3) squared off against Montclair State (11-7) in the Skyline Conference championship game for the third straight year. Unfortunately for the Ospreys, the result was the same for the third year in a row. The Red Hawks outscored Stockton 7-3 in the second half and topped them 11-7.
Zack Aho (Shamong/Seneca) led the Ospreys with two goals and two assists while
Colin Shea (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) also scored twice.
Lance Pecina (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) scooped a team-high four ground balls and dished one assist.
Montclair State scored first but Aho answered just 22 seconds later following a faceoff win by
Tyler Bollard (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan). The teams battled scoreless for over 10 minutes before Aho scored again with one second left in the first quarter to put Stockton ahead 2-1.
Mike Caposella (Wayne/DePaul Catholic) boosted the lead to 3-1 with 2:57 gone in the second quarter. The Red Hawks came back with three straight goals, the third of which gave them a 4-3 edge with 24 seconds left in the half. Stockton again came up with some late-period magic as another faceoff win by Bollard led to a goal from Shea to tie it 4-4 with just five seconds on the first-half clock.
Montclair State took the lead for good with two goals by Dan Bellezza 48 seconds apart early in the third quarter.
Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) got one back for the Ospreys but they were blanked for the last 9:40 of the period while one more Red Hawk tally upped the deficit to 7-5 after three.
James Clarke made it 8-5 only 1:12 into the fourth quarter. Stockton tried to rally as Shea and
Brandon Nunez (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) sandwiched markers around one by Bellezza. The Ospreys trailed 9-7 after Nunez's tally with 5:57 remaining and were shut out the rest of the way.
Two late Montclair State goals resulted in an 11-7 final result as the Red Hawks won their ninth straight Skyline Conference title, with the last three coming at Stockton's expense. Both teams, along with Kean, will no longer be in the Skyline after this season and are expected to compete as independents next year.
Stockton goalkeeper
Justin Ruiz (Holmdel/Holdel) finished with 10 saves.
Ryan Bradley (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) contributed a team-high two caused turnovers.
With the ECAC tournament canceled due to a lack of available teams, today's defeat ends Stockton's year at 16-3. The Ospreys set school records for wins (16), goals (276) assists (157) and points (433) in a season.
