Swarthmore, PA – Stockton University (1-2) went to extra time for the second straight game and unfortunately suffered the same fate. This time, Swarthmore (2-1) edged the Ospreys 1-0 in a shootout after 100 scoreless minutes. The shootout was the first for Stockton since a 2010 game, ironically also against Swarthmore, and only the fifth shootout in the program's history.
Stockton goalkeeper
Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) made 10 saves and
Niya Calloway (Matawan/Matawan) came off the bench to stop a penalty stroke in the first half. The teams combined for 47 shots overall, with the Ospreys holding a 26-21 advantage, including 21 shots on goal but no one could get the ball past Sorochynskyj, Calloway or Swarthmore goalie Zelda Bank (10 saves).
During the first half,
Rebecca Bausher (New Egypt/New Egypt) hit the post with a shot and Calloway denied a penalty stroke by the Garnet. Stockton outshot Swarthmore 10-6 in the second half, 7-5 in the first overtime and 5-2 in the second OT.
Swarthmore went first in the best-of-five shootout and neither team converted during the first three rounds. A successful try by Sophie Peipher in round four was answered by one from
Sarah Gawrysiak (Haddon Twp./Haddon Twp.) and everything was even entering the last round. Clare Perez scored what proved to be the difference and then Stockton's try to match was off the mark, ending the game with the Ospreys on the down side of the 1-0 decision.
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) led Stockton with a game-high seven shots followed by Gawrysiak and
Leah Davies (Ocean City/Ocean City) with four apiece.
Stockton will conclude its three-game road trip with a match at New Paltz on Saturday at 1 p.m.
