Stockton Downs Kean 68-59

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-6, 4-5 NJAC) played a solid defensive game and was able to down Kean University (5-10, 3-6 NJAC) by a 68-59 score on Saturday afternoon. Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) led the Ospreys with game highs of 19 points and nine rebounds, helping Stockton snap a two-game losing skid.

The Ospreys started fast, scoring the first five points of the game as the teams settled in. The Cougars rebounded and led 15-10, before Stockton ripped off an 18-2 run in a span of 5:08 to take a 28-17 lead. Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) accounted for eight of the markers.

Kean would not be deterred as they answered, scoring eight straight points to cut the margin to 28-25 with 4:44 left in the half. Three-pointers by Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) and Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) made it 34-25 before the Cougars closed out the period by scoring six of the last eight points to finish at 36-31 in favor of the Ospreys.

Stockton kept their foot on the gas to begin the final frame, starting out on a 12-4 run to increase the lead to 48-35 with 14:53 remaining. Ferebee scored seven of the markers during the run, with Johnson adding a three-ball and Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) potting a basket. Stockton increased the advantage to 54-42 with a little over 10 minutes left in the game before Kean fought back one last time.

The Cougars closed the gap to 56-51 with 3:56 left but could get no closer. Another three by Johnson plus five points from Barnes and four from Ferebee offset a last ditch three-ball by Kean, to close out the game at 68-59 in favor of Stockton.

In addition to Freebee's strong outing, Johnson scored 16 points including 4-8 from behind the arc and dished three assists to tie Onnir Kendall (Williamstown/Williamstown) for team honors. Barnes chipped in with 13 markers, with Jerkins pulling down seven rebounds. Stockton held a 43-26 margin on the glass for the contest that led to 20 second-chance points.

Keenen Williams, Jr. topped Kean with 13 points. Teammates Justin Watson, Micah Kerr and Stephen Strom all tallied 10 points, with Watson leading the Cougars with six rebounds.

Stockton next contest will be a home affair against Rowan University on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm.
