Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (12-9, 6-8 NJAC) used balanced scoring to down Rutgers Camden 83-75 on Wednesday evening.
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) led four Ospreys in double figures with 18 points on the night. The win snapped a three-game losing skid as well.
Stockton jumped out early on the Scarlet Raptors, running out to a 17-5 lead in the first 6:06 of the game. Barnes and
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) led the way with five markers each during the spurt.
The Ospreys kept up the onslaught the rest of the half, leading 46-26 at the break. Stockton shot 54.5 percent from the floor (18-33), 50 percent from three-point range (7-14) and dished 10 assists on their 18 baskets during the first stanza. The defense forced 12 turnovers that led to 18 points for their Ospreys. Barnes and
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) led the way with 10 points apiece.
The home squad ran the lead to as many as 24 points at 50-26 before Stockton started to run into foul trouble. The Scarlet Raptors used that advantage to whittle the deficit down. The Ospreys led 69-48 with 7:51 remaining before Rutgers Camden began their final push. The Scarlet Raptors scored 27 points in the final minutes but Stockton held on for the 83-75 victory.
In addition to Barnes, Ferebee tallied 17 points while Johnson and
Kelvin Tull (Millville/Millville) netted 13 points each. Tull also led the Ospreys with nine rebounds. Johnson and
Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) set career highs with six and four assists respectively.
Vincent Anfield, Jr. led the Scarlet Raptors with a game-high 39 points, along with team-highs of eight rebounds and three steals. Anfield scored 30 of his team's 49 second-half points. Charlie Riccardi tallied 16 points as the only other player in double figures for Rutgers Camden. The Scarlet Raptors shot 11-25 (44.0%) from the behind the arc and 16-17 (94.1 %) from the charity stripe in the game.
Stockton will play their next game at home when they face Montclair State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
