Stockton Falls 1-0 in Regular Season Finale

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-8-3, 4-3-2 NJAC) finished the regular season with a 1-0 setback to Rutgers-Camden (13-4-2, 6-2-1) at G. Larry James Stadium. The result left the Ospreys with the #5 seed for the NJAC Tournament, which starts on Saturday.

Stockton possessed the ball throughout the first half but could not generate much in the way of quality chances. Although the Ospreys outshot Rutgers-Camden 9-1, most of the shots were from long range and well off the mark as the Scarlet Raptors defended the scoring areas well.

Rutgers-Camden capitalized on its first real opportunity, which came late in the half. Patrick Grudnick played a low ball forward from midfield toward the Stockton goal. Shortly after the ball rolled into the box, Christian Ognibene poked it past charging goalkeeper Michael Lescano (Union/St. Benedict's Prep) for a 1-0 count with 5:14 left in the period.

Stockton's best chance of the night came in the final minute of the first stanza. A deflection by Justin Ruiz (Wayne/Wayne Hills) at the right post bounced off Scarlet Raptors' goalie James Brett and then off the post but stayed out.

Each team registered three shots in a second half during which Rutgers-Camden made protecting its lead the top priority. Stockton managed one shot on goal, a try from the top of the box by Ruiz that was handled easily by Brett with 8:39 remaining, and Stockton fell 1-0.

In addition to 12 shots, the Ospreys generated eight corner kicks but could not penetrate the Rutgers-Camden defense. Brett made three saves for the shutout, with the deflection by Ruiz the lone worthwhile chance by Stockton.

The #5 seed Ospreys will play an NJAC Tournament first round game at #4 seed Rowan University on Saturday (time TBA).
