Galloway, NJ – Top-seeded Stockton University (26-8) saw their season come to a stunning halt as number four seed Montclair State (20-9) knocked the Ospreys out of the NJAC Tournament 3-1 in the semifinals on Thursday night. The scores were 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, and 25-22.
Allie Desmond (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) topped the Ospreys with 16 kills on the evening.
Stockton started strong, jumping out to a five-point lead on two occasions during first set. The Ospreys led wire-to-wire as Desmond spiked five of the team's nine kills in the 25-18 win.
The Ospreys tried to maintain that momentum in set number two but the Red Hawks took control quickly. After the Ospreys scored the first three points of the set, Montclair rallied for the next six markers and eventually stretched the margin to six at 19-13. The visitors closed out the frame, winning 25-18.
The third period was a taut affair as both teams scrapped for points. Stockton used three service points and some great defense by
Cady DeLay (San Diego, CA/Westview) to forge a 16-15 lead. After a Red Hawks timeout, an 8-1 run by Montclair State proved to be the difference in the 25-20 victory.
Stockton pounced early again in the fourth set and ran the lead to 9-3 before the Red Hawks' defense started to assert itself. The Ospreys had trouble getting spikes down and Montclair State reeled off six straight points to pull into a 16-16 tie.
After the Red Hawks surged ahead 19-17, Stockton used a kill by
Julie Kohlhoff (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and two by
Jocelyn Holobetz (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) for a 3-1 spurt that knotted the match 20-20. Montclair State answered with three points in a row and went on to seal the upset 25-22.
Desmond was the only Osprey with double figures in kills for the night.
Emily Sullivan (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) led the team with 29 assists and three aces.
Natalie Miller (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson), and DeLay scooped 16 and 14 digs respectively.
Franceska Gustave (Edgewater/Leonia and Kohlhoff (West Islip, NY/West Islip) contributed five and four blocks respectively, with Kohlhoff also spiking nine kills.
Carly Waterman led four Red Hawks in double figures in kills with 16. Caitlin Lange had 14 kills and a team-high five blocks, with teammates Natalia Majkut and Leah Higgins spiking 12 kills each.
Ashley Griffith led all players with 51 assists. Siyara Herbert and April DiAngelo scooped 14 and 11 digs respectively. The Red Hawks will travel to #3 seed Kean for the NJAC championship on Saturday at 1 pm.
