Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (14-6) continued their run through the ECAC Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Juniata College (10-8) in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
Casey Cordonna (Barrington/Haddon Heights) tallied the only goal to give the Ospreys an opportunity at the ECAC championship tomorrow.
The teams battled defensively through the first half as the squads mustered just one shot and two penalty corners each through the first 35 minutes of play. Both teams opened the offense in the second stanza, with the Eagles outshooting Stockton 5-3 in the half.
Juniata had a high shot deflected in at the 14-minute mark, but the goal was disallowed as a dangerous shot. The Ospreys took advantage of the break and tallied the lone marker of the match with 11:12 remaining in regulation.
Cordonna passed a penalty corner to
Issy Gilhooley (Ocean City/Ocean City) just inside the arc. Her blast toward the left post was deflected by Cordonna in front for the score and the 1-0 margin. Stockton's defense made it hold up, as they advanced to the ECAC final match with the 1-0 win.
Britney Stein (Ocean City/Ocean City),
Jennelle Long (Matawan/Matawan) and
Sarah Fisher (Monroeville/Woodstown) also fired off shots for the Ospreys on the day.
Stockton goalie
Emily Gilligan (West Deptford/West Deptford) made four saves in posting her second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season. The whitewash gave her the school record for shutouts in a season.
Sarah Alexander led the Eagles with two shots, with goalkeeper Kylie Edwards making one save in the loss.
Stockton's next match will be tomorrow afternoon when they host Arcadia for the ECAC championship. Game time is set for noon.
