Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (1-1) tried to rally late but fell 73-58 to Farmingdale State (2-0) in the championship game of the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament.
Jordan Taylor (East Orange/Cicely Tyson) scored 19 points to lead the Ospreys.
Stockton fell behind 15-2 in the early going but rebounded to get within 37-28 at the break. After trailing by 16 (35-19) with 4:49 left in the half, a pair of three-pointers by
Keenan Williams (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) and a basket by
Othniel Nyamekye (Irvington/Irvington) offset a basket by the visitors to get to the break at 37-28 in favor of Farmingdale.
Williams led all players with 10 points in the first half and Nyamekye gave the Ospreys a lift off the bench with two points and four rebounds in just under five minutes of playing time. Stockton struggled to score, shooting just 29.4% (10-34), including only 4-22 (18.2%) from three-point range.
In the second half, the Ospreys got as close as 45-37 on a three-pointer by Taylor, but the Rams later extended the lead to 63-43 with 5:07 to play. Stockton tried to make one last run as four points by
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami) along with baskets by Williams and Taylor, sliced the margin to 67-57 but that was as close as Stockton would come in the 73-58 setback.
Williams scored 15 points, dished four assists, grabbed six rebounds and swiped four steals on the day. Ferebee finished with nine points and six boards while Taylor also snagged six rebounds. Overall, Stockton went 7-38 (18.4%) from three-point range and 11-22 (50%) at the free throw line.
George Riefenstahl led Farmingdale State with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Teammates Ryan Kennedy and Matthew Graham scored 15 and 10 points respectively. The Rams outrebounded Stockton 54-44.
Stockton will begin NJAC play on Tuesday night by hosting The College of New Jersey at 8 pm.
