Chester, PA – Stockton University (1-0) won its season opener in exciting fashion as
Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) scored the game-winning goal with one second left to give the Ospreys a 12-11 victory over Widener (1-2). Ojeda had a breakout game, netting a career-high four markers to lead Stockton to the win.
Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) contributed three goals and an assist while
Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) tallied two goals and two assists for the Ospreys.
Goals by Butrico, Patterson and
Kristen Russo (Wayne/Wayne Hills) propelled Stockton to a 3-1 lead in the first seven minutes. After Patterson's second marker later made it 4-2, Widener netted three straight counters to pull ahead 5-4. Ojeda hit the net with 27 seconds left in the half for a 5-5 tie at intermission.
Trailing 7-6 in the second half, Stockton reeled off four unanswered goals, two by Ojeda and one each from Patterson and
Tamara Torales (Basking Ridge/Ridge), to build a 10-7 lead with 11:27 remaining. The Pride came back with three tallies in a row to tie it 10-10 with 4:10 to play.
Stockton regained the lead on a free-position shot by Russo, but Widener's Kristi Rohrer tied the game at 11-11 with 1:53 to go. With time winding down, Patterson forced a turnover at the 17-second mark and Ojeda capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the dramatic game-winner with one second on the clock to give Stockton the 12-11 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Stevie Ader (Califon/Voorhees) earned the win with five saves in her college debut. Freshman
Jessica Catalioto (Ringwood/Lakeland) recorded game highs of six draw controls and three caused turnovers in her first college game. Stockton outshot Widener 40-22, however Pride goalie Katie Hayes made 19 stops.
Stockton will play its first home game of the year on Saturday when the Ospreys host Albright at 1 pm.
