Stockton Upsets #15 Montclair State 69-65

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (14-8, 10-5 NJAC) used a big fourth period and downed #15 Montclair State (19-2, 14-1 NJAC) 69-65 on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped the Red Hawks 17-game winning streak and gave the Ospreys their seventh win in the last eight games. Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/CH West) led four Ospreys in double figures with a game-high 20 points.

Stockton began the contest by scoring the first nine points, including four by April Peterson (Lafayette/High Point) and a three-ball by freshman Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.). The Ospreys ended the quarter leading by 16-8, holding the Red Hawks to just 3-13 (23.1%) from the field during the frame.

The Red Hawks showed why they are nationally ranked by d3Hoops.com and the WBCA as they righted the ship in the second period. The visitors closed the quarter on a 15-5 run in the midst of a 23-point quarter to close the gap to 32-31 in favor of the Ospreys at the break.

Montclair State took their first lead of the game, on a Katie Sire three-pointer, for a brief 36-35 advantage at the 7:20 mark of the third period. Stockton answered with a 9-2 spurt for a six-point margin at 44-38 with 3:07 left in the frame. Once again, the Red Hawks responded and forged a 48-48 deadlock heading into three final period.

The fourth quarter saw Montclair jump out to a 60-56 lead with 6:42 remaining before Stockton pushed back. Jumpers by Williams and Peterson tied it up at 60-60. From there it was all Ospreys as Lea Mendolla (Nutley/Mount St. Dominic) scored a basket then fed Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) for another hoop and a 64-61 lead at the 1:46 mark.

Stockton then finished off the upset by hitting five of six foul shots to offset two baskets by the Red Hawks for the 69-65 victory. The Ospreys shot 7-11 (63.6%) from the field during the crucial final stanza to lock up the game.

Williams also led all players with six blocks and grabbed eight rebounds in addition to her 20 markers. Treadwell registered her sixth double-double in the last seven games with a 15-point, 16-rebound effort to lead all players on the glass.

Peterson scored eight points and set a season-high with 10 rebounds and a game-high three steals in playing all 40 minutes. Mendolla tallied 10 points and dished a team-high four assists while Porricelli tied her career high with 13 points.

Sire led Montclair with 19 points, with teammates Taylor Harmon and Alex McKinnon scoring 16 and 14 points respectively. Sire topped all players with five assists on the afternoon.
