Stockton Deals New Paltz its First Loss, 12-5

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-2) took the lead for good with a four-goal run in the first half and dealt New Paltz (3-1) its first defeat of the season, 12-5. Kristen Russo (Wayne/Wayne Hills) led a group of eight goal scorers for the Ospreys with a hat trick and grabbed a game-high five draw controls.
 
Danielle Graham (Cherry Hill/CH West) and Michaella Butrico (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) chipped in with two goals apiece followed by Nicole Jandras (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) with a goal and an assist.
 
Goals by Jandras and Tamara Torales (Basking Ridge/Ridge) gave Stockton a 2-0 lead but New Paltz answered with two straight tallies for a 2-2 tie. Just 20 seconds after the tying goal, Russo scored her first of the game to give the Ospreys the lead for good and ignite a four-goal outburst.
 
Butrico followed with her first counter and Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Liberty) potted a free-position shot two minutes later for a 5-2 advantage. Thirty seven seconds after, Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) buried a free-position shot to up the lead to 6-2. The Hawks halted the run with a goal at the 3:09 mark and Stockton led 6-3 at the half.
 
New Paltz trimmed the margin to 6-4 only 20 seconds into the second half but the Ospreys put the game away with five straight goals while stout defense held the Hawks scoreless until the final minute. Russo started the run with her second marker to make it 7-4. Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) later stripped the goalie and scored into the empty net for an 8-4 lead.
 
Russo completed her hat trick with 12:59 on the clock and Graham followed with two straight goals. After holding New Paltz scoreless for 29 minutes, the Hawks ended the drought with 23 seconds to go. Butrico then tossed in a late tally to cap the 12-5 victory.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Stevie Ader (Califon/Voorhees) tied her early career high of 12 saves to collect the win. Amanda Scarpa (Manalapan/Freehold Twp.) sparked the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while freshman Kaeleigh Becker (Cherry Hill/Camden Catholic) also registered three caused turnovers.
 
Tara Bovich paced New Paltz with a goal and an assist. Hawks' goalie Nicole Sheintul matched Ader with 12 saves of her own.
 
Stockton will be home again on Wednesday for a matchup with Eastern University at 7 pm.
