Reading, PA – Stockton University (10-6) split a non-conference doubleheader at Alvernia (12-1-1). The Ospreys were blanked 3-0 in the first game but then dealt the Crusaders their first loss of the season 8-3 in the nightcap, which was called due to darkness during the top of the seventh.
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) extended her hitting streak to 14 games with three safeties in the twinbill.
The first game was scoreless into the bottom of the sixth, when Alvernia scored three times to down the Ospreys 3-0.
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) went 2-3 at the plate for Stockton. Pitcher
Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) allowed just one hit through the first five innings before being touched up for three runs on four hits in the sixth frame.
Stockton's best scoring chance came in the top of the fifth. Schieda led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a hit by
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park). Lobell then stole second to put two runners in scoring position with one out, but two strikeouts kept the Ospreys off the board.
Cosenzo went 2-5 with a double and three RBI while Lobell was 2-4 with a double and two RBI in the nightcap.
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) added two hits and a run in the victory.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) was 1-3 with a run. Thomas had stolen 61 consecutive stolen bases, the fourth-longest streak ever in NCAA Division III, but was caught stealing for the first time in nearly two years (April 2, 2016) to end the historic run.
Stockton built a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a squeeze bunt by
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) and pinch-hit RBI single by
Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross). RBI singles by Massa in the second frame and Cosenzo in the sixth, scoring Thomas, upped the lead to 4-0. Alvernia quickly closed the gap to 4-3 on a three-run homer by Joannah Lim in the bottom of the sixth.
The Ospreys put the game away with two-run doubles by Lobell and Cosenzo in the top of the seventh. After Cosenzo's hit, the game was called due to darkness with one out and two runners aboard, giving Stockton the 8-3 triumph.
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) earned her team-leading fifth victory of the season on the mound. Bibeault pitched four scoreless innings and scattered four hits for the win.
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) tossed the final two frames for the Ospreys.
Stockton will begin NJAC play with a doubleheader at William Paterson on Friday at 3 pm.
