Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (6-24, 3-15 NJAC) rallied late, but dropped the season finale to Rutgers Newark (13-23, 5-13 NJAC) by a 14-8 score on Monday afternoon. Senior
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) led the Ospreys with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored in his final collegiate game.
Â
The contest was a taut affair through four innings, as the Scarlet Raiders held a slim 2-1 lead. But the visitors broke the game open in their half of the fifth frame, sending 10 hitters to the plate, scoring seven runs and chasing Osprey starter
Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey), the first of five Osprey hurlers on the day.
Â
Stockton plated single runs in the fifth and sixth on RBI by
Joe Cashman (Bordentown/Bordentown) and Hobbs to slice the margin to 9-3. That was as close as the Ospreys would come as Newark put another five spot on the board in the seventh inning to take a commanding 14-3 lead.
Â
The Ospreys made one final charge, as they sent 10 batters of their own to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. Hobbs,
Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock),
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central),
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) and
Nick D'Arcy (Toms River/TR East) picked up RBI in the uprising, before setting the final score at 14-8.
Â
DeSenzo and Gustites rapped out a pair of hits each in addition to Hobbs' three-hit game, with DeSenzo pilfering three bases. Hobbs and Reedy drove in two runs each, with
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp. /Monroe Twp.) scoring twice in the contest
