Galloway, NY – Stockton University (5-13, 2-4 NJAC) split an NJAC doubleheader with Kean University (13-14, 3-3) on the Ospreys' home field. Stockton fell 8-4 in the opener but earned the split with a 5-4 win on a walk-off single by
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) in the 10th inning of the nightcap.
Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) paced the Ospreys with five hits on the day.
In the first game,
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) went 3-4 with a run and an RBI while DeSenzo,
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) and
Nick D'Arcy (Toms River/TR East) contributed two hits apiece.
Stockton took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single by Hobbs and bases-loaded walk to
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) in the second inning. Kean tied the game 2-2 with two runs on three hits and an error in the fifth frame and went ahead 3-2 on a solo home run by Frank Urso in the seventh.
Hobbs led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and later scored on an outfield error following a hit by DeSenzo. Two batters later, Perrino singled in DeSenzo with the go-ahead run that made it 4-3 Ospreys. Kean quickly regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth and tacked on three more in the ninth for the 8-4 final.
DeSenzo went 3-4 with a double, two runs and two stolen bases in the second game. D'Arcy rapped two more hits and added a run and an RBI while
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) had two hits and two walks.
Kean scored once in the top of the first but Stockton answered in the bottom half as Perrino singled home DeSenzo, who had walked and stolen second, for a 1-1 tie. The Cougars plated single runs in the third and fifth stanzas for a 3-1 count. The Ospreys responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead 4-3.
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) plated DeSenzo with an RBI single and later scored on an RBI single by D'Arcy for a 3-3 tie.
David Mann (Waldwick/Waldwick) then was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Perrino with the go-ahead run and a 4-3 edge. Kean tied the game in the top of the eighth and the neither team managed a baserunner in the last 1½ innings of regulation.
Stockton held Kean in the top of the 10th and capitalized on its chance in the bottom half. D'Arcy reached on a fielder's choice and
Joe LaCava (Toms River/TR North) drew a one-out walk that moved D'Arcy into scoring position at second base. DeMarrais followed with a walk-off single down the left field line that brought D'Arcy home with the winning run for a 5-4 triumph.
Ryan Moore (Waldwick/Waldwick) earned the win with 4.1 innings of work out of the bullpen in which he held the Cougars to one run on one hit with three strikeouts. Viani started the game on the mound and yielded three runs, one unearned, on seven hits with three whiffs in 5.2 innings pitched.
Stockton is off until Thursday, April 12 when the Ospreys play at The College of New Jersey at 3:30 pm.
