Mahwah, N.J. – Stockton University (14-2, 3-2 NJAC) clinched an NJAC Tournament berth with a 2-1 win over Ramapo College (6-11, 1-4) in overtime. The Ospreys won in OT for the second straight time and improved to 3-0 in games that went beyond regulation this season.
The victory was Stockton's 14th of the season, moving the team within one of the school record of 15 wins that was set last year. Stockton qualified for the NJAC playoffs for the second year in a row as well.
Issy Gilhooley (Ocean City/Ocean City) netted the game-winner for the Ospreys.
The game was statistically even, with each team recording 13 shots and eight penalty corners, and it was scoreless until the last four minutes of regulation. Ramapo's Victoria Docherty put the Ospreys down 1-0 with just 3:27 left in the fourth quarter.
Following the goal, Stockton pulled goaltender
Emily Gilligan in favor of an extra field player in an effort to tie the game. The Ospreys did just that 1:07 later as
Casey Cordonna (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) scored the tying goal with an assist by
Gianna Morganti (Berlin/St. Joseph's) with 2:20 on the clock.
Stockton nearly won it in regulation, but a shot by Cordonna with 1:40 left was knocked away by a Ramapo defender for a defensive save and the contest went to overtime.
Gilligan made two saves early in OT and the Ospreys transitioned to the offensive end, where they earned a penalty corner. Gilhooley then potted her third goal of the season with 2:52 gone in the overtime to give Stockton a 2-1 triumph.
Gilligan earned the victory with nine saves in the game.
Stockton will hit the road on Wednesday for a non-conference game at Centenary University at 4 p.m.
