Baltimore, Md. – Stockton University (31-4) was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 defeat to unbeaten Johns Hopkins (31-0) in the second round. The Blue Jays are ranked sixth in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Sarah Walsh (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) and
Julie Kohlhoff (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) paced the Ospreys with eight kills apiece.
Emily Sullivan (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) chipped in with 25 assists, 14 digs and five kills.
Natalie Miller (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) scooped 12 digs followed by
Sophia Marziello (Haddonfield/Paul VI) and
Christie Louer (Clifton/Clifton) with eight digs apiece.
The Ospreys started strong, building a 10-6 lead in the first set behind two early kills by Walsh. Johns Hopkins answered with an 11-2 run to pull ahead 17-14 and Stockton trailed by at least three the rest of the set, falling 25-20.
The Ospreys held a slim 11-9 edge early in the second stanza but yielded six points in a row and fell behind 15-11. A kill by Walsh later pulled Stockton within 17-16 but the Blue Jays scored the next four points and the Ospreys were unable to recover, resulting in another 25-20 setback.
Three assists and two kills by Sullivan helped Stockton forge a 9-9 tie in the third set before Johns Hopkins took control with a 10-1 run and eliminated the Ospreys from the NCAA Tournament, 25-16.
The defeat brought Stockton's season to an end with an outstanding 31-4 record. The Ospreys equaled the second-highest win total in school history. They also won the NJAC championship for the first time since 2015 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in their last five NCAA appearances.
