Stockton Ends Season with 57-51 Win

Newark, NJ – Stockton University (10-15, 8-10 NJAC) brought the 2018-19 season to a close in a positive way with a 57-51 victory over Rutgers-Newark (13-12, 6-12). The Ospreys scored more than half of their points from beyond the arc, sinking 10 three-pointers and shooting 38.5 percent (10-26) from downtown.

In his final college game, senior Keenan Williams Jr. (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) went 5-9 from three-point range and scored a game-high 22 points, surpassing the 20-point mark for the second straight time. Tariq Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Anthony's) tossed in nine markers followed by Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) with eight.

After the teams went back-and-forth in the first 10 minutes, Stockton created some separation by outscoring the Scarlet Raiders 17-5 over a nine-minute span to open up a 32-22 lead. Baker and Williams Jr. led the charge with five points apiece. After two Rutgers-Newark free throws in the closing seconds, the Ospreys settled for a 32-24 advantage at the break.

Stockton got the margin back up to 10 twice in the first few minutes of the second half and then stretched it to 11 at 40-29 on a three-pointer by Williams Jr. The Ospreys then cooled off and Rutgers-Newark went on a 20-5 run over the next 12 minutes to surge ahead 49-45 with 4:18 remaining.

Five points by Hamilton and two free throws by Williams Jr. vaulted Stockton back in front 52-51 with 2:46 on the clock. After 100 scoreless seconds, Williams Jr. buried a three-pointer at the 1:06 mark to extend the lead to 55-51 and two late free throws by Baker clinched the 57-51 triumph in the season finale.
