Galloway, NJ – Stockton University collected two awards from the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) at its 27th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day luncheon, which took place yesterday at Seton Hall University.
Senior
Allie Desmond (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge), a starter for the Osprey volleyball team, was recognized as Stockton's NJAIAW Woman of the Year. The award is based on athletic excellence, academic success and community service.
The Stockton women's cross country team earned the NJAIAW Team Academic Award for fall sports. The squad posted the highest team grade point average of all women's fall sports teams at NJAIAW institutions. The team earned the academic award for the second time in the last five years.
Desmond capped her four-year career at Stockton with an outstanding senior season in the fall. The right-side hitter earned NJAC Player of the Year, AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, AVCA All-Northeast Region, NJAC First Team and All-ECAC Second Team honors. Desmond led the NJAC in kills (3.84 kps) and points (4.13 pps) and finished fifth in hitting percentage (.298).
Desmond tied for 11th in the nation in total kills (468) and was 44th in kills per set while also tallying 68 blocks. She played in all 34 matches and registered at least 10 kills in 27 contests, including four matches with 20 kills or more. During the season, she was selected NJAC Player of the Week twice plus ECAC Player of the Month for October.
Desmond led the Ospreys to a 26-8 record in 2018 and finished her career at Stockton with 773 kills, 134 digs and 108 blocks in 104 matches. In addition to her stellar play on the court, Desmond is a health science major at Stockton and two-time NJAC All-Academic Honorable Mention student-athlete.
