Clermont, FL – Stockton University (6-4) finished their annual Spring Break trip to Florida with another split of the games today. The Ospreys dropped a 4-2 decision to Amherst (6-1), and then rebounded with a 6-0 shutout over Franklin & Marshall (6-4).  Freshman
Leah McCray (Philadelphia, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) led the Ospreys with three hits on the day.
Â
Stockton fashioned a 6-4 record during the week, including playing against three teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
Â
In the first game, Stockton fell behind 1-0 on a solo homer off starter
Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) in the second inning. The Ospreys answered with solo tallies in the third and fourth frames for a 2-1 lead. McCray and a pinch hit by
Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) accounted for the RBI knocks.
Â
Amherst would chase Semeraro with another solo home run in the fifth to knot the game at 2-2. A third homer, this time a two-run shot off reliever
Victoria Torp (West Milford/ West Milford) in the sixth inning, proved to be the difference in the game as Stockton fell 4-2.
Â
It was all Ospreys in the finale as the squad plated three runs in the second and third innings for the 6-0 victory.
Megan Leitner (Lake Hiawatha/Parsippany) and
Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover/Hanover Park) reached on base hits in the second frame to start the rally.
Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) doubled to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Two consecutive sacrifice bunts, the last being a suicide squeeze by
Morgan DiVello (Hammonton/Hammonton), increased the margin to 3-0.
Â
Three more tallies in the third inning put the game away for Stockton.
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp) doubled, and then scored in front of a massive home run by McCray, her second in as many days, for a 5-0 advantage.
Â
A Leitner walk, a single by Cosenzo that moved Leitner to third base and a sacrifice fly by Lobell ended the scoring. That was all
Samantha Huetter (Roseland/West Essex) would need as she fashioned a beautiful 1:15 gem.
Â
Huetter tossed her third shutout of the week, pitching seven innings and allowing just three hits, with 13 ground ball outs. Huetter is a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Â
Stockton will return home to face Alvernia on Tuesday for their two next games. The doubleheader starts at 3 pm in Galloway.
