Stockton Holds On for 15-13 Win

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-2) held off a late surge by Widener University (2-5) and held on for a 15-13 victory on Wednesday night. Freshman Michelle Pascrell (Howell/Freehold Twp.), sophomore Danielle Graham (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill West) and senior Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami) all scored three goals for the Ospreys.

The Pride scored 16 seconds into the gamer for a quick 1-0 lead, before Stockton responded with three of the next four scores to take a 3-2 lead. Two goals by Ojeda and one by Graham gave the Ospreys a brief advantage.

After a Pride tally to knot the game at 3-3, Stockton scored three of the last four goals of the first half to take a 6-4 lead at the break. Pascrell, Graham and Mary Carroll (Marlton/Cherokee) gave Stockton the margin.

In the beginning of the second period, three goals by Widener offset another tally by Graham to knot the game once again, this time at 7-7 with 22:51 remaining in regulation. Stockton then exploded for six consecutive markers, over a six-minute frame, to take a commanding 13-7 lead.

Ojeda, two scores by freshman Jennifer Toal (Pine Beach/Toms River South) and single tallies by Tamara Torales (Basking Ridge/Ridge), Pascrell and Abbey Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) boosted the Ospreys into the lead. For Torales, it was her first goal of the season.

Widener would not relent as the Pride went on a run of their own to make it a close contest. A 6-2 surge over a 12-minute span, made it 15-13 with 2:20 remaining in the game. The Pride could get no closer and the final score was set as Stockton came away with the two-goal victory.

In addition to the three goal scorers, Casey Shultz (Sewell/ Washington Twp.) dished a game-high three assists. Torales, Pascrell and Yannacone scooped three ground balls each, with Torales causing three turnovers. Carroll led the Ospreys with five draw controls. Brooke Hallett (Absecon/Holy Spirit) earned the win with a seven save effort in net.

Widener was led by Kelly Lynch with a game-high seven goals. Ceci Puente had three ground balls while teammate Alexis Colella caused three turnovers. Melanie Bert led all players with six draw controls. Goalkeeper Katie Hayes made 14 saves for the Pride.
