Langhorne, PA –Stockton University (10-3) scored four runs in the ninth inning but fell short in its comeback try and suffered a 10-7 defeat in a road game at Cairn University (6-7).
Brendan Doherty (Middletown/Middletown North) led the Ospreys with three hits, including a double, and two RBI.
Garrhet Reedy (Tinton Falls/Monmouth) went 2-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) was 1-4 with a run and an RBI as well.
Reedy led off the third inning with a single and later scored along with
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) on a Cairn error for a 2-0 lead. The Highlanders got on the board when a runner scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third.
The Ospreys answered with a run in the fourth as
Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) notched an RBI with a sacrifice bunt for a 3-1 edge. Cairn made it 3-2 with a single tally in the fifth frame and then overtook Stockton with three runs in the sixth for a 5-3 count.
The Highlanders later extended to 10-3 entering the ninth inning. Stockton tried to rally with four runs on four hits and a walk in its last chance. Reedy doubled in two runs and later scored on an RBI single by Swentkowski. Doherty then doubled home Swentkowski to trim the deficit to three at 10-7, but the rally stalled there.
Freshman
Sean O'Rourke (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands) got the start on the mound. O'Rourke had a solid outing, allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts in four innings pitched. The lefty exited with the Ospreys on top 3-1 and was not involved in the decision as Cairn rallied for nine runs in the next four innings.
Stockton will host FDU-Florham on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
