Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) was chosen NJAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Hughes improved to 4-1 on the season by earning the win in Stockton's 1-0 victory over New Jersey City University on Saturday.
Hughes made his fifth start of the season and tossed seven scoreless innings against the Gothic Knights, allowing five hits and striking out nine. The righty allowed just one runner beyond second base in his seven innings of work and the nine whiffs were Hughes' second-highest total of the season.
Hughes stands at 4-1 with 39 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA in 26 innings of work. He has held opponents to a .170 batting average and pitched in two combined shutouts. Hughes leads the Ospreys in wins, ERA, strikeouts, opposing batting average and innings pitched.
Hughes has been one of the top pitchers in the NJAC this year. He is tied for the conference lead in wins and also stands second in strikeouts plus fourth in ERA and opposing batting average. Now in his fourth season at Stockton, Hughes has moved into sixth in school history with 145 career strikeouts.
Stockton is 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC at the midpoint of its 2019 season. The Ospreys will host Kean University in a conference game on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
