Stockton Sweeps Stevens 11-3 and 5-4

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (20-14) swept a non-conference doubleheader from Stevens (15-13), winning the first game 11-3 in five innings and taking the second contest 5-4 on a walk-off single by Alexandra Cosenzo (East Hanover Park). The first baseman finished with three hits on the day.

Cosenzo went 2-3 with a double and two runs in the opener. Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) also contributed two hits, two runs and an RBI for the Ospreys, who have won three straight and five of their last six.

Stockton scored five runs on three hits and an error in the second inning. Cosenzo came in with the first run on an error. Madison Kelly (Franklinville/Delsea) earned an RBI with a squeeze bunt. Ashley Lobell (Cedar Knolls/Whippany Park) singled and scored on a fielder's choice. Morgan DiVello (Hammonton/Hammonton) capped the big inning with a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.

In the third frame, an RBI double by Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) and a two-run double by Kelly upped the advantage to 8-0. Stockton added to the lead in the fourth inning as Ortiz and Nicole Petrovich (East Hanover/Hanover Park) stroked RBI singles and Ortiz then scored on a groundout that was Kelly's fourth RBI of the game for an 11-0 lead.

Stevens spoiled the shutout with three runs on four hits in the fifth frame before Stockton closed out the 11-3 victory on the run rule. Samantha Huetter (Roseland/West Essex) earned the first of her two wins on the day. Huetter allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the complete game.

Six Ospreys rapped one hit apiece in the nightcap. Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) went 1-4 with a run and an RBI while Cosenzo and Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) each tallied a hit, a walk and an RBI.

Stevens jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first but Stockton got two back in the bottom half on an RBI single by Schieda that scored Murzello and a sacrifice fly by Ortiz that plated Schieda to make it 3-2.

The Ducks added a run in the top of the second for a 4-2 count before the Ospreys responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame to tie the game 4-4. Dunphy stroked an RBI single and DiVello brought home Carli Shaw (Bordentown/Bordentown) with the tying run on a squeeze bunt.

The teams went scoreless for the next four innings. After Huetter came out of the bullpen to retire Stevens in order in the top of the seventh, Stockton cashed in for the winning run. Dunphy led off with a walk and was replaced by Murzello, who reentered the game as a pinch runner and stole second.

Two batters later, Cosenzo knocked a walk-off single that scored Murzello with the winning run to give Stockton the sweep, 5-4. Huetter earned her second win with her one perfect inning in relief to improve to 8-3 on the season.

Stockton is scheduled to host Ramapo in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm.
