Stockton Ends Season with 14-10 Setback

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-7, 2-4 NJAC) finished the 2019 season with a 14-10 setback in a home game against Montclair State (10-7, 4-2) on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Michelle Pascrell (Howell/Freehold Twp.) set one school record and tied another for the Ospreys.

Pascrell scored three goals to tie the Stockton mark of 51 by Sarah Frankovic in 2016 and registered two caused turnovers to finish with 28 on the season and top the record of 27 by teammate Tamara Torales (Ridge/Basking Ridge) last season.

Casey Shultz (Sewell/Washington Twp.) also scored three goals followed by Nicole Jandras (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) with two markers. Jandras sparked the Ospreys to a great start with the first two goals of the game. Pascrell's first of the day capped a span of three tallies in 4:25 that gave Stockton a 3-0 lead.

Montclair State got on the board 51 seconds after Pascrell's goal with the first of six straight by the Red Hawks that put the Ospreys behind 6-3. Mary Carroll (Marlton/Cherokee) snapped her team's scoreless drought of 18 minutes to make it 6-4, but the visitors netted one more goal for a 7-4 count at the break.

Montclair State scored three of the first four goals of the second half, with Shultz netting the lone one for Stockton. Trailing 10-5, the Ospreys continued to battle. Tallies by Jennifer Toal (Pine Beach/Toms River South) and then Shultz trimmed the gap to three at 10-7. After the Red Hawks scored, Pascrell made it a three-goal game again at 11-8.

After Montclair State upped the margin back to five at 13-8, Pascrell and Shultz each potted their third goal of the game to pull Stockton within three again at 13-10 with 5:02 remaining. The Ospreys registered the next two shots, but one was wide and one was saved. A late tally by the Red Hawks set the final at 14-10.

Torales, who suffered a foot injury six games into the season and had surgery shortly after, was inserted into the starting lineup on Senior Day. Walking a boot and using crutches, she stood on the field for the opening draw before exiting seconds later. Earlier in the day, Torales gave the student-athlete speech at Stockton's annual athletic awards brunch.

Torales was joined in the starting lineup by fellow seniors Gaby Ojeda (Galloway/Absegami), Melanie Patterson (Jackson/Jackson Memorial), Melanie Iatarola (Sewell/Washington Twp.), Brittany Corti (Little Egg Harbor/Pinelands) and Brooke Hallett (Absecon/Holy Spirit), all of whom played their final college game.

Including this year's 9-7 record, the Stockton program has never had a losing season in its six years of intercollegiate play. The 2019 squad received significant contributions from a talented freshman class, one that accounted for 119 of the team's 228 goals (52 percent).
