Stockton Downs Cabrini at Stevens Tournament 3-1

Hoboken, NJ – Stockton University (12-2, 1-0 NJAC) finished up play at The Stevens Tournament on Saturday, by defeating Cabrini (4-8) 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23).  Charlotte Leon (Northport, NY/Northport) led the Ospreys with 14 kills, while teammate Julie Kohlhoff (West Islip, NY/West Islip) added 10 spikes with a .562 hitting percentage on the day.

The tightly contested match saw the teams battle for every point during the day. In the first set, with the score tied 20-20, a pair of kills by Leon, one by Sarah Walsh (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) and an ace by Alice Brandt (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) gave the Ospreys the 25-23 win.

Stockton looked to run away with the second frame, leading 20-14 before Cabrini closed to within three at 21-18. Errors by the Cavaliers and a kill by Haley Green (Springville, UT/Maple Mountain) put the Ospreys up two sets to none at 25-19.

The Ospreys looked to close out the match in three sets, but Cabrini had other ideas. With Stockton up 19-12, the Cavaliers ran off nine of the next 11 points to tie the set at 21-21. They continued to put the pressure on and captured the third set by a 26-24 score.

The Cavaliers kept up the momentum in the final set, putting on an 11-6 run to take a 16-13 lead, forcing Stockton into a timeout. The Ospreys fought back to force a 22-22 tie, then put the match away on the strength of two aces by Brandt and a kill by Kohlhoff for the 25-23 victory.

It was the second time this season Stockton has downed the Cavaliers and extended their winning streak to five consecutive matches. The Ospreys have also won eight of their last nine matches.

In addition to Leon and Kohlhoff, Emily Sullivan (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) posted a double-double of 40 assists and 12 digs, to go with nine kills and two aces. Jocelyn Holobetz (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) spiked eight kills, with Natalie Miller (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas) leading the team with 18 digs from the backline.

Stockton will return to NJAC play for their next match, when the Ospreys will travel to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday night. Match time is set for 7pm.
